  • 100g or 2/3 tin tinned tuna

  • 1/4 red chilli, finely chopped
  • 1 dessertspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 lime, juiced

  • a splash sesame oil
  • finely chopped coriander to garnish (optional)

  1. Bring a pan of water to the boil and add the nest of noodles. Immediately turn off heat.
  2. Add tuna, spring onions and chilli to a large bowl. Mix well.
  3. Add the soy sauce, lime juice and mayonnaise and mix.
  4. After 3-4 minutes, drain the noodles and run under cold water for 1 minute.
  5. Add the noodles to the bowl of tuna and mix well. Garnish with chopped coriander, if using.

I use plain Greek yogurt in my tuna salad recipe. You can use mayonnaise instead, if you prefer. I like to make tuna salad without mayo, using Greek yogurt, because it makes a healthy tuna salad. (Also, I don’t care for mayo.) You can also use mashed avocado to make a dairy-free tuna sandwich without mayo!

Second Guessing Myself

So full disclosure: I technically have had these photos done since LAST year during Lent. I had to re-edit them to match my new logo (isn&rsquot it the best? I can&rsquot wait for the full website reveal!). I then sat down to write the recipe last night and was like &ldquoCrap! I literally have no idea how much mayo to put in!&rdquo I originally thought &ldquo1/2 &ndash 3/4 cup&rdquo for a pound of noodles but then I started second-guessing myself.

Thank goodness I did as I was totally off! You see we have friends and family coming up tonight to hang out. I have dinner stuff all planned &ndash various street tacos, Mexican corn, and black beans bar. How the Fantabulous in-laws are coming up early &ndash Oh! I just looked at the clock, they&rsquoll be here within the hour! (I need to hurry as I need a shower!), so I needed to have something for lunch as we&rsquore not eating until like 7. Perfect timing, eh to make this dish AND measure how much mayo.

Oh trust me, I was not happy about making it and yes I gagged but I love you guys and I do love this dish. It turns out that it&rsquos 1 1/2 cups in the dish. Once it chills I&rsquoll probably have to add another 1/4-1/2 cup of mayo (not looking forward to that) as noodles will suck up mayo as it chills. It&rsquos all good though!

When Mr. Fantabulous saw me making this I got &ldquoOh yes! I love that stuff! Can we eat it now?&rdquo LOL, I said, &ldquoyes but it&rsquos better if it chills for an hour.&rdquo He gave me a deep sigh and then went about to clean. That&rsquos one good thing about when we have company. He&rsquos a total cleaning machine &ndash thank God!

Now you could lighten this up with low-fat or fat-free mayo but I find the fat-free turns watery and it doesn&rsquot impart that good of a flavor. You could use Greek yogurt or even sour cream if you wanted to. I, even though I gag at mayo, think it tastes best with it. For those of you that grew up observing Meatless Fridays &ndash did you have this or a dish similar?

Actually, mine is slightly different from my Mom&rsquos version as she put big fat onion chunks in hers and God knows I want nothing to do with that. Minced shallots, however, would be great in it. I would have put it in however at the time I didn&rsquot have any. The stuff I made this morning, I did though.

Oh, one last comment &ndash so it&rsquos funny as Mom called this a casserole and then a salad. I, personally, think it&rsquos a salad as casseroles I tend to consider baked. What would you call it? Casserole or Salad?


Most canned tuna is gluten free. That being said, always check the ingredients just in case. You never know when a brand changes ingredients in a product.

Although you can use any tuna, I do not recommend tuna packed in oil because it can make this recipe somewhat oily.

One of my favorite comfort foods since I was a little girl, my Mom's Tuna Macaroni Salad Recipe is easy-to-make, made with easy-to-find vegetables and pantry staples, and is ready in under 30 minutes.

This tuna pasta salad also has twice as much tuna as typical recipes, bringing about 22 grams of protein to each pasta salad serving! Whether you make this for lunch or bring it to a potluck, this tuna pasta salad is sure to satisfy --- inside, and out.

I've been going more for comfort food and pantry recipes lately. Not only do I not want to make a grocery trip if I can avoid it, but I want to feel like I'm eating well while I stay at home.

So, the other day when I scanned the pantry before lunch, I realized I had all the essentials on hand for my Mom's Tuna Macaroni Salad Recipe. I had pasta, tuna, mayonnaise, dried dill, and mustard in the cabinet and some hearty veggies in the fridge.

And, in my world, tuna macaroni salad qualifies as the ultimate comfort food. Whether we ate the salad in the car on road trips or whipped it up together for Saturday lunch, growing up it was always a dish that meant safety, comfort, and Mom's love.

  • Distilled white vinegar -- adds a little kick and flavor to the pasta salad
  • Sweet pickle relish
  • Dried dill weed
  • Dijon mustard

  • Celery
  • Sweet pepper-- green or red pepper are delicious in this salad.
  • Peas -- we'll defrost frozen green peas for this salad. Super easy and adds a few extra veggies!

What recipe substitutions can you make for this recipe?

Pasta -- any small shaped pasta can work in this recipe

Canned tuna -- canned chicken or even canned salmon can work in place of the canned tuna

Mustard -- if you don't have dijon mustard, you can substitute classic yellow mustard. It will add a bit more zip to the recipe, but the overall flavor profile will still be similar

How do you make tuna macaroni salad from scratch?

  1. Cook your pasta according to the package's directions, in heavily salted water.
  2. While the pasta cooks, whip up your salad dressing -- whisking together the mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, vinegar, and seasonings and stir in the veggies.
  3. Flake the tuna and fold it into the dressing.
  4. Drain the pasta -- placing the frozen peas in a colander and pouring the hot pasta water over them to drain.
  5. If you will be serving the salad immediately, cool the pasta by rinsing the pasta with cool water in the colander.
  6. Gently fold the pasta into the dressing until coated. If the pasta is still warm, cover and let it cool in the refrigerator until serving. If the pasta is cool, serve!

Pro-tips to make this recipe perfect every time!

  1. Cook the pasta in heavily salted water - this makes all the difference in the flavor of your pasta!
  2. Finely mince the onions - this helps the onions add dimension to the dressing without adding an intense bite
  3. Use good quality tuna - solid white albacore tuna packed in water is my top pick. It's meaty and hearty but has a pure and non-fishy flavor. If you can't find albacore, I recommend chunk light tuna packed in water as a back-up.
  4. Make the pasta ahead of time - for the best flavor, make the pasta salad ahead of time with warm pasta (i.e. don't rinse the pasta with cool water before folding it into the dressing). When the pasta is warm, it best absorbs all the flavors of the salad dressing, making this dish super tasty.

A note on the pasta temperature:

If you are going to serve this pasta salad immediately after making it, chill the pasta before adding it into the salad. If you are making the pasta salad ahead of time, add it in warm, as the extra heat of the pasta will help it absorb the dressing flavors better.

To chill your pasta, simply run cool water over it in the colander until the pasta is cool to the touch.

How do you easily thaw peas for tuna pasta salad?

Here's a super quick pea thawing trick my mom taught me: place the peas in the colander. Then, drain the hot pasta water and pasta over the peas. The heat from the pasta water will cool the peas just enough for this salad.

Can you make this recipe gluten-free?

Yes, this salad is very simple to make gluten-free. Just use gluten-free pasta (rice or chickpea are both delicious) in place of the traditional wheat pasta and this recipe will be good to go!

Can you use olive oil, avocado oil, or another reduced-fat mayonnaise for this recipe?

Yes, you definitely can use a reduced-fat mayonnaise for this recipe. In fact, I make this recipe most with olive oil mayonnaise.

The recipe calories are calculated using an olive oil mayonnaise, so if you use a full-fat mayonnaise, the fat and calorie count may be higher than estimated (and please see my nutrition facts disclaimer, since the calorie count is only an estimate).

Do you serve tuna pasta salad warm or cold?

Usually, this salad is served cold. I occasionally like to serve it warm, however, on cooler days or when I'm just craving a warm meal.

Can you make this macaroni salad with tuna ahead of time?

Yes, you can make this tuna macaroni salad ahead of time. Ideally, I like to make it a few hours ahead of time, to give the salad time to marinate in and absorb the flavors of the dressing.

Storage directions:

Refrigerate the leftover salad in a covered container for up to 3-4 days. If the pasta has absorbed the dressing, you may need to stir in some milk (see notes below) to remoisten it.

This recipe does not freeze well.

How do you keep this pasta salad moist?

The first way to keep our tuna pasta salad moist is to store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Your pasta may still absorb a lot of the dressing, however.

To remoisten the salad, just mix in a teaspoon or two of milk to the pasta salad until the dressing gets creamy again.

What can you add to this tuna macaroni salad?

There are so many delicious add-ins you can mix into this salad. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Chopped hard-boiled eggs
  • Seeded and diced tomatoes
  • Seeded and diced cucumbers

Cold Tuna Pasta Salad

It doesn't get much easier than Cold Tuna Pasta Salad. This classic summer side dish is ready to stick in the refrigerator after just three steps and twenty minutes of prep. The best thing about it, though, is how versatile it is. You can bring it to pretty much any occasion. It's tasty, refreshing, and surprisingly hearty. You could absolutely repurpose it as a light lunch or dinner if you felt like it. It's creamy and delicious, but it's also packed full of wholesome ingredients that feel delightfully refreshing to bite into on a hot day.

Notes Serving Suggestion: For extra veggies, serve over mixed baby greens and top with fresh chopped tomato.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Uncooked rotini (spiral) pasta
  • 2 cups Cooked mixed vegetables (carrots, green beans, corn, peas)
  • 1 Small onion, finely chopped (about 1/4 cup)
  • 1 (10-1/2-ounce) Can Campbell’s® Condensed Cream of Celery Soup or Campbell's® Condensed Cream of Celery Soup
  • 1 / 2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cans (about 6 ounces each) Tuna, drained and flaked

Instructions

Cook and drain the rotini according to the package directions.

Stir the soup, mayonnaise, and vinegar in a large bowl. Add the cooked rotini, mixed vegetables, onion, and tuna and toss to coat. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Season the rotini mixture to taste.

You represent and warrant to Prime Publishing and its Affiliates that (a) you have the right, power, and authority necessary to enter into this Agreement, to fully perform your obligations hereunder, and to grant the licenses set forth in Paragraphs 3 and 5 above, (b) you will comply fully with all terms of this Agreement, (c) the Materials submitted to Prime Publishing by you, and Prime Publishing's and its Affiliates' exercise of their rights hereunder, do not and will not violate, misappropriate or infringe any intellectual property right, including but not limited to trademark rights, copyrights, moral rights and publicity rights of any third party, (d) you possess all rights necessary for the reproduction, distribution, transmission, public performance, public display, and other exploitation of the Materials by Prime Publishing and its Affiliates as permitted hereunder, (e) the Materials are not pornographic, obscene, libelous, defamatory, tortious, or otherwise unlawful, and (f) all factual statements submitted by you are accurate and not misleading. You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold Prime Publishing and its Affiliates harmless from all claims, liabilities, damages, and expenses (including, without limitation, reasonable attorneys' fees and expenses) arising from your breach of any representation or warranty set forth in this paragraph.

8) Restrictions. You agree that you will not submit Materials that are unlawful, pornographic, libelous, defamatory, tortious, obscene, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable, or that otherwise violate general Prime Publishing community standards. We expressly reserve the right to remove or not make available any Materials that we deem to be in violation of this Agreement, applicable laws or our community standards in our sole discretion. You agree that you will not upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Materials to us or our Affiliates that contain software viruses or any other computer code, files, or programs designed to interrupt, destroy or limit the functionality of any computer software or hardware or telecommunications equipment.

9) No Obligation. Although we have the right to include your Materials in the Service or in any Media, we do not have the obligation to do so. We may, in our sole discretion and for any reason, refuse the Materials or remove them from our Service at any time.

10) Changes to Agreement. We reserve the right to change any of the terms of this Agreement or any Specifications or Guidelines governing the Service at any time in our sole discretion. All changes will be effective upon posting to the Service. However, for all changes to this Agreement, excluding Specifications and Guidelines, we will post a notice of change for thirty (30) days. You are responsible for reviewing the notice and any applicable changes. YOUR CONTINUED USE OF THIS SERVICE FOLLOWING OUR POSTING OF ANY CHANGES WILL CONSTITUTE YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF SUCH CHANGES.

11) Prime Publishing Intellectual Property. Without our prior written consent, you may not use our intellectual property, including, without limitation, our trademarks, trade names, trade dress, or copyrighted material, in any manner.

12) Communications. Prime Publishing and its Affiliates may communicate with you in connection with the Service, electronically and in other Media, and you consent to such communications regardless of any "Customer Communication Preferences" (or similar preferences or requests) you may have indicated on the web sites of Prime Publishing or its Affiliates or by any other means.

13) Waiver. PRIME PUBLISHING AND ITS AFFILIATES WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO SUCH DAMAGES ARISING FROM BREACH OF CONTRACT OR WARRANTY OR FROM NEGLIGENCE OR STRICT LIABILITY) ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THIS AGREEMENT, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF (OR KNEW OR SHOULD KNOWN OF) THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

14) Disclaimer. PRIME PUBLISHING PROVIDES THE SERVICE "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND.

15) Miscellaneous. This Agreement will be governed by the laws of the United States of America and the state of Washington, without reference to rules governing choice of laws. Any action relating to this Agreement must be brought in the federal or state courts located in Seattle, Washington, and you irrevocably consent to the jurisdiction of such courts. You may not assign this Agreement, by operation of law or otherwise, without our prior written consent. Subject to that restriction, this Agreement will be binding on, inure to, and be enforceable against the parties and their respective successors and permitted assigns. Our failure to enforce your strict performance of any provision of this Agreement will not constitute a waiver of our right to enforce such provision or any other provision of this Agreement subsequently. The Specifications and Guidelines (including all future changes) are incorporated by reference into this Agreement. This Agreement is in addition to, and does not supersede or modify, the terms and conditions of use of the web sites of Prime Publishing and its Affiliates.

Sharing Your Own Images

You! Anyone who is a registered and logged in user.

Please share images that will help other visitors. For example:

  • Images that highlight a article's features ("Here are the controls on this music player", "See the clasp for this necklace", "Look at the box this came in")
  • Images showing someone using a product ("Here I am wearing this scarf", "Install the ink cartridge here")
  • Images related to a topic ("My dog Skipper", "A great outfit", "Our family at Yellowstone", "How to glue a chair using a cabinet clamp")
  • Images that show how a product performs ("I took this picture with this camera", "This shirt shrunk in the wash", "The saw blade after 100 cuts")
  • Images that give a sense of the size of the product ("This refrigerator is actually 6' tall", "A cellphone the size of a credit card")

Do include captions for your images. While not required, they provide context for your images. Additionally, you can use the Image Notes feature to highlight one or more interesting areas in your image. Everyone will see your notes when they roll over your image.

What shouldn't I share?

Behave as if you were a guest at a friend's dinner party: please treat the Prime Publishing community with respect. Do not share:

  • Profane, obscene, or spiteful images, or any images with nudity
  • Images to which you do not own the intellectual property rights
  • Images featuring phone numbers, mail addresses, or URLs. You can watermark an image with copyright information.
  • Images featuring availability, price, or alternative ordering/shipping information
  • Images featuring external Web sites, contests, or other solicitations
  • Any personal information about children under 13
  • Images with automobile license plates that are prominent and easily read (pictures with license plates that have been fuzzed out or that otherwise cannot be read are acceptable).

The same guidelines apply to your captions and notes.

What image formats and sizes are supported?

We support JPEG, GIF and PNG images. Files must be no more than 1MB. Both the image height and the image width must be between 60 and 3500 pixels.

Instead of uploading an image, can I just enter a link to an image?

No, all images must be uploaded to Prime Publishing. This ensures your image is always available.

How long does it take to upload an image?

The time varies depending on the speed of your Internet connection and the size of the image file. For a 400KB image, for example, you should expect 2 to 4 minutes over a 56KB modem and under 1 minute for DSL or cable modem.

Where will my image appear?

Generally your image will appear where you uploaded it: in the article image gallery.

Who owns the images I upload?

The rights owner of the image continues to own the image uploading your image to Prime Publishing does not transfer ownership.
